Shah Rukh Khan to be back on small screen

SHAH RUKH KHAN re-joins the gang of film superstars invading the small screen. He last appeared on television as the host of 'Kya Aap Panchvi Paas se Tez Hain'?

Joining the brigade of silver screen superstars including Amitabh Bachchan, Preity Zinta, Shilpa Shetty, Akshay Kumar and many more SRK is not bothered to be compared with anyone.
He will be hosting a show called Zor ka Jhatka, which is based on the format of the AXN show Wipeout. It is a game show featuring various obstacle courses. SRK earlier also appeared as the host of KBC Season 3. The new show, Zor ka Jhatka, goes on the floors in the first week of January. Produced by Endemol India, the show will see SRK taking 28 TV stars outside their comfort zone to Argentina. At stake is prize money worth Rs 15 million, including a cash prize of Rs 5 million for the winner of the finale.

SRK will challenge these contestants to various tasks and obstacles, something similar to another show aired on Pogo channel Takeshi’s Castle.
With all the top stars now aiming towards the small screen, it seems either the silver screen has been saturated of new opportunities or it’s just an easier way to rake in some cash as the shows are bound to grab some eyeballs owing to the host’s popularity.

New Year messages sms and New Year greetings

THE NEW Year is around. When the clock strikes twelve on December 31, people all over the world cheer and wish each other a 'Happy New Year!'.
As the tradition goes, for most people the New Year symbolises the fresh beginning and a resolve for a better future.
According to G K Chesterton, the object of a new year is not that we should have a new year. It is that we should have a new soul.
Thus, the New Year celebration is all about optimism and an occasion to look forward to good times ahead and spread happiness. Much of all this is expressed through New Year wishes and messages.

Here are some new year messages and wished to exchange.

Top New Year health resolutions of 2011

THE NEW Year is close and it’s that time of the year to make new year resolutions – the top resolutions of 2011 are learning to ride a bike and losing those extra pounds – say experts.
“Maybe it was the shock of seeing oneself in recent holiday photos, or not being able to fit into desired party attire that causes a vow to lose weight, and for many more it is a medical event such as a heart attack, the threat of diabetes or high blood pressure,” said Dr. Jessica Bartfield at the Loyola University Health System.
“Behaviour change is the cornerstone of healthy, successful weight loss and it takes about three months to establish a new behaviour. At Gottlieb, a team of tried-and-true medical experts can teach you the skills you need to achieve and maintain behaviour change,” she added.
Top weight-loss behaviours from Bartfield and the NWCR:
• Eat breakfast – “Eating within one hour of awakening can boost your metabolism up to 20 percent for the rest of the day,” Bartfield said.
• Weigh yourself once per week - “Monitoring your weight on a weekly basis provides a fairly accurate weight trend and, more importantly, an early detection of any weight regain, which allows you to adjust behaviors accordingly,” Bartfield said.
• Get in one hour of moderate physical activity each day - “Snow shoveling, vacuuming, taking the stairs – you don’t have to run like a hamster on a wheel for 60 minutes. Take three, 20-minute brisk walks, or compile the one hour based on a series of activities,” Bartfield said.
• Watch less than 10 hours of TV per week - “Many argue they don’t have time to exercise, but when I ask them to count the hours they spend watching TV or surfing the Net, they are able to find the time for activities where they are moving instead of sitting,” Bartfield said.
What not to do - Barriers that prevent people from losing weight
• Overestimate amount of physical activity -“Park your car farther away, take the stairs, manually change TV channels – these are all simple ways to get more physical activity and you need to write them down as they are performed to keep yourself honest,” Bartfield said.
• Underestimate caloric intake – Keeping a food journal helps you document the calories you take in.
• Set unrealistic goals - “Patients often set vague and outcome-related goals such as “weigh 150 pounds by summer” or “exercise more.”
Set specific and attainable goals. Instead of trying to get to a certain weight, start by trying to lose 10 percent of your weight – that amount has been shown to have a statistically significant improvement in health and reduction in risk of obesity-related disease.
• Lack of consistency - “Eat at regular intervals seven days per week,” she said.
• Failure to plan for setbacks – “Enlist a trusted friend, or enroll in a program to learn and master the rules of weight loss,” Bartfield said.

Is the tradition of New Year resolutions an absurdity?

A RESOLUTION is a mental commitment that an individual makes for reforming a habit or lifestyle or relationship by learning lessons from the past experiences.
And, New Year resolutions are the change-affecting commitments made by an individual that normally go into effect on New Year's Day. For this one is to reflect upon self-improvement annually and resolve to accomplish the improvement.
While stressing the need of resolution, Eric Zorn said, "Making resolutions is a cleansing ritual of self assessment and repentance that demands personal honesty and, ultimately, reinforces humility. Breaking them is part of the cycle."

On the other hand, there are critics of the New Year resolutions too. As Mark Twain has aptly remarked, "New Year is a harmless annual institution, of no particular use to anybody save as a scapegoat for promiscuous drunks, and friendly calls and humbug resolutions."
But the absurdities of the New Year resolutions can’t escape the mind of the wise. Here are some funny quotes describing the New Year resolutions as a foolery of mind:

  • Oscar Wilde: Good resolutions are simply cheques that men draw on a bank where they have no account.
  • Joey Adams: May all your troubles last as long as your New Year's resolutions!
  • Jay Leno: Now there are more overweight people in America than average-weight people. So overweight people are now average…which means, you have met your New Year's resolution.
  • James Agate: New Year's Resolution: To tolerate fools more gladly, provided this does not encourage them to take up more of my time.
  • Anonymous: Many people look forward to the New Year for a new start on old habits.
  • Anais Nin: I made no resolutions for the New Year. The habit of making plans, of criticising, sanctioning and molding my life, is too much of a daily event for me.

A few research studies inform that only about 12 per cent actually achieved their goals through the resolutions made on the eve of New Year. Anyway, about 10 per cent people of any group achieve their whether they resolve or do not.

New Year Eve: Better reflect and get perfect

THOUGH REFLECTING on our experiences in 2010 on the eve of New Year 2011 may prove discomforting, but it is not a bad idea at all.

Read the following and perhaps you may feel motivated to reflect on the past year and plan consciously for the New Year.

An autobiography of New Year titled "I Am the New Year" in a Bible Illustrator goes as follows.

"I am the new year. I am an unspoiled page in your book of time. I am your. I am your opportunity to practice what you have learned about life during the last twelve months. All that you sought and didn’t find is hidden in me, waiting for you to search it but with more determination. All the good that you tried for and didn’t achieve is mine to grant when you have fewer conflicting desires. All that you dreamed but didn’t dare to do, all that you hoped but did not will, all the faith that you claimed but did not have—these slumber lightly, waiting to be awakened by the touch of a strong purpose. I am your opportunity to renew your allegiance to Him who said, 'Behold, I make all things new.''

Here is my acrostic verse on the significance of reflection on the eve of New Year.

N: Next chance at improving oneself
E: Efforts be made consciously to achieve the purpose of life
W: Wealth of time be planned and used adequately
Y: Yesteryear is lost for ever but the new can planned in advance
E: Every moment should count in future
A: All the good that you tried for earlier, continue that and have fewer conflicting desires
R: Reflect on the past year and yourself to find what needs to be done in the New Year

Likewise, Steven B. Cloud, in his write-up titled "A Year of Time" says the following.

"As we look into 2011 we look at a block of time. We see 12 months, 52 weeks, 365 days, 8,760 hours, 525,600 minutes, 31,536,000 seconds. And all is a gift from God. We have done nothing to deserve it, earn it, or purchased it. Like the air we breathe, time comes to us as a part of life. The gift of time is not ours alone. It is given equally to each person. Rich and poor, educated and ignorant, strong and weak—every man, woman and child has the same twenty-four hours every day. Another important thing about time is that you cannot stop it. There is no way to slow it down, turn it off, or adjust it. Time marches on. And you cannot bring back time. Once it is gone, it is gone. Yesterday is lost forever. If yesterday is lost, tomorrow is uncertain. We may look ahead at a full year’s block of time, but we really have no guarantee that we will experience any of it.

Obviously, time is one of our most precious possessions. We can waste it. We can worry over it. We can spend it on ourselves. Or, as good stewards, we can invest it in the kingdom of God. The New Year is full of time. As the seconds tick away, will you be tossing time out the window, or will you make every minute count?"

So, on the eve of New Year, reflect, plan and move ahead. Wish you all a Happy New Year!

Christmas 2010: Last minute Christmas shopping boosts sales across U.S.

MORE LAST- minute shoppers flocked to stores this year on the final Saturday before Christmas than last year, but spending is expected to be even higher late this week.

U.S. retail sales on Saturday were up 15.1 percent from last year to $7.58 billion as many people wrapped up their gift buying, research firm ShopperTrak said on Tuesday. This year also benefited from its comparison to the weekend in 2009 when a blizzard hammered the East Coast.

That storm contributed to a 16.5 percent drop to $6.58 billion in so-called "Super Saturday" spending in 2009. This year's totals were below the $7.87 billion Americans spent for the day in 2008, said ShopperTrak, which analyzes the retail industry.

Yet with less than a week to go until Christmas, many shoppers are still procrastinating. Some eleventh-hour gift seekers will even be out on Christmas Eve - about 23 million, according to a separate survey on Tuesday from the International Council of Shopping Centers.

"Now that we are down to the wire, consumers have stepped up their shopping pace, as well as their purchases," ICSC chief economist Michael Niemira said in a statement. "All and all, retail shopping trends are shaping up to be very favorable for holiday sales, as well as December sales performance, for retailers."

Consumer spending makes up about 70 percent of the U.S. economy and analysts have said they expected the 2010 holiday season to show the biggest sales gains since 2007.

December 23 is likely to be the year's second biggest day in sales and third biggest in foot traffic, said ShopperTrak founder Bill Martin.

"Black Friday," the day after Thanksgiving that traditionally kicks off the holiday shopping season, saw $10.69 billion in sales, according to ShopperTrak, making it the biggest shopping day so far this year. It is called "Black Friday" because retailers hope it will put their accounts solidly in the black through strong sales.

Saturday's foot traffic was up 10.1 percent compared with last year, ShopperTrak said.

Nearly three quarters of Americans completed their shopping by the end of Super Saturday, according to the ICSC. The previous week, 56.6 percent had finished their holiday shopping.

The Saturday shopping binge boosted sales for the entire week, which rose 4.2 percent from a year ago, according to an ICSC-Goldman Sachs weekly chain store sales index.

As usual, the spending will not end on Christmas, the ICSC also found. Nineteen percent of consumers plan to go shopping the day after, and 47 percent said they would be out the week between Christmas 2010 and 2010 New Year's.

Children celebrate advent of Christmas 2010 in Kolkata

CHILDREN CELEBRATED the advent of Christmas by singing carols and various colourful events to spread the message of love and peace here during the weekend. Children gave various performances such as a magic show, puppet show, songs and games.

Ruth Crizzte, the organiser said the event was meant only for children but their parents came along, as well.

“It is basically children-oriented show, only for children. The purpose of Christmas is that Jesus is born on Christmas day and Santa Claus brings toys for children. So, we organised it only for children and their parents also came and enjoyed, because they want their children to see that their children are happy and enjoying themselves, and that is why we bring this event forward, one week before Christmas,” she said.

The children enthusiastically participated in the event.

“I have come here because ahead of Christmas, they are having this Christmas celebration and I came here to attend this event and I had a lot of fun and lot of happiness is there. Michelle Obama goes 'Vintage' for Christmas in Washington

Paris Hilton has released her Christmas Card for 2010 and it's really something to talk about.

Wearing not much, the heiress poses in a gold chair wearing a skimpy silver sparkling dress and rocking a stoic expression. She looks very sultry and seductive ,something everyone looks forward to on Christmas.

Hilton had an interview with Radar Online in which she said, "Christmas is my favorite times of year. We will be spending Christmas in Maui, then Cabo for New Year's. I can't wait!" There is nothing cheery or joyful about Hilton's photo and many are wondering who exactly she plans on sending it out to.

The photo looks more like a shot for a calendar or an upcoming album than a Christmas card.

Vijender claims gold, tally touches 14

HISTORY WAS charted at the 16th Asian Games in Guangzhou, China when boxing’s pin up boy, Vijender Singh claimed gold, thus taking India’s gold medal graph to 14. The last gold haul was India’s best performance at the Asian Games so far.

To claim the 14th medal, Vijender pulverised Olympic bronze medalist, Uzbekistan's Abbos Atoev by a massive 7-0, which made the Indian spectators hysterical with the unbelievable win.

So far, India’s best performance had been during the 1982 Asian Games which was held in New Delhi. During the 1982 Games, India had clinched 13 gold, 19 silver and 25 bronze that led to a total of 57 medals.

The 25 year old, who has been compared with the likes of soccer players like David Beckham for his looks and crowd pulling ability compensated to the medal loss during the Commonwealth Games 2010 which were held in New Delhi.

Vijender’s performance on the penultimate day before the Games finally come to a close raised India’s hope of being somewhere where they could have never envisaged. However, China’s Zou Shiming retained his light-flyweight title.

With an addition of 11 more medals during the day, India’s medal graph raised to 14 gold, 17 silver and 33 bronze (total 64).

India's stand in Asian Games 2010

INDIA WON two surprise gold medals after two days of average performance.
India's Ashwini Chidananda won a gold in the women's 400metres hurdles and Joseph Abraham clinched the gold in the men's category of he same even in the Asian Games 2010.

Ashwini outdid herself by clinching the gold with a timing of 56.15 to give India their 8th gold medal in the Games.

India’s performance was getting pretty uneventful for the past two days and these gold medals come as a pleasant surprise for all back home.

Another bronze was won by Mausam Khatri in men's 96 kg freestyle wrestling event, which made up for the disappointing performance of wrestlers earlier in he games.

Also, in hockey after the heart breaking loss to Malaysia in semi-finals, Indian team picked up the bronze after defeating Korea for it in the third-place playoff.

And with that bronze India finally ended the eight-year long wait of getting back on the podium in the sport. India won the last medal in hockey in the Asian Games 2002, in Busan.

Somdev wins second gold, creates history

SOMDEV HAS won India’s 7th gold, a second for him after he grabbed a gold yesterday in the doubles event with Sanam Singh.

The duo bashed out Gong Maoxin and Li Zhe of China and followed in to the footsteps of Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi. They sailed into o the semi-finals after winning this gold medal, taking India’s gold to 6.
And today, Somdev becomes the first-ever Indian to win a gold at a men’s singles tennis event at the Asian Games.
Today’s match was against Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan and the match belonged to Somdev right from the start.
Somdev, whose international ranking is 106 faced Istomin, who achieved a world-ranking of 39 this year. Somdev was totally in form right from the beginning and it seemed Istomin was just not playing the part. Somdev shunned Istomin 6-1 6-2.
This gold can be called one of the most precious ones as it’s the first ever in its category. Somdev has surely created history for India.
What is interesting is that this historic gold has come from a rather lesser known face of Tennis and not from Leander Paes or our own BHupathi or even Sania. Its time we realized our potential truly and gave equal importance to all players. Somdev has outdone himself by taking on the way he did to the world no 39, Istomin in today’s match.
India’s medal tally now is 37 with 7 gold medals, 12 silver and 18 bronze.  India stands tall at 6th position sharing it with Thailand. If Thailand wins another gold it could beat India to the 6th position.
China sits comfortably at the top position with a whopping 311 medals comprising of 157 gold medals. Following China are Korea with 182 medals at 2nd position and Japan at the 3rd position with 158 medals.

Indian wrestlers Ravinder Singh and Sunil Kumar Rana clinched bronze medals in their respective weight categories in the Greco-Roman style on Sunday. Two more bronze came our way in the shooting event of men’s double trap team event and women’s singles tennis event.

The trio of Deepika Kumari, a gold medal winner in last month’s Commonwealth Games, Dola Banerjee and Rimil Buriuly lost the tense semifinal shootout to the Koreans 26-29  and won a bronze in the women’s team event.
All these medals above total up to 9 medals bringing the total number to 33. India stands at an appreciative 8th rank at the Asian Games 2010.

India's stand at the Asian Games 2010

THE ASIAN Games are better than ever before with India grabbing its maiden gold in rowing and silver in Wushu (which is a new addition) and progressing steadily in tennis and hockey. Shooting, another strong sport this year brought silver and a bronze.

India surely is doing well so far and fingers are crossed to see if the performance is continued. As far as the 7th day is concerned India had lot of action stored for keen followers.
Firstly, early morning India grabbed the long awaited second gold medal at the men’s singles rowing competition and soon after that Minz-Puhana won bronze in the rowing women's pair event. Another silver was added to the kitty in the Men's Eight rowing competition. So, rowing brought in a lot of applauds and the much awaited gold for India.

In tennis our own star Sania Mirza qualified to the quarterfinals and is inching closer towards the medal rounds. Hopes are set and pressure is mounting, such pressure only in a way prevented Saina- the badminton starlet to grab any of the medals as she lost in the quarterfinals early this morning.
After the early gold for India, India has landed in the 11th position in the medals tally with two gold medals. They were at 12th position at the start of the day. Malaysia is in 10th spot with three golds. If India wins another gold medal now, they will go past Malaysia because they have won eight silvers to Malaysia's three.

India gets second gold at Asian Games 2010

BAJRANG LAL Takhar created history by winning the first ever gold in rowing for India at the Men’s Singles Sculls competition.

Takhar, is an army office,r who also was the first Indian to win a silver medal at the Doha Asian Games in 2006, he led the 2,000 meter race right from the start and went on to take gold with a timing of 7:04.78. Chinese Taipei’s Wang Ming Hui (7:07.33) took the silver while Iraq’s Haeider Hamarasheid (7:10.10) won the bronze with a third place finish.

Following Takhar’s historic gold, India's Pratima Puhana and Pramila Prava Minz won the bronze medal in the women's pair rowing event.

With Takhar’s feat, India’s wait to get its second gold medal at this edition of the Asian Games also ended. The rowing competition came to an end with these. India has done great this year in the sport with three silver, one bronze and the latest gold.
Elsewhere in badminton, India’s strong medal hope Saina Nehwal crashed out of the women’s singles badminton quarterfinals, losing 8-21, 21-8, 19-21 to Hong Kong's Pui Yin Yip.

India’s long wait for another Gold ended today whereas a strong hope for another medal was crashed. Saina’s defeat is a major blow for her fans, as she was being touted as one of the lead players in the Asian Games.

India won two silver medals in rowing event and one bronze in shooting yesterday at the Asian Games 2010. Earlier this morning, a Gold was clinched by Bajrang Lal Takhar which will do wonders for India at the medal tally.

Its Silver and Bronze Day for India at Asian Games 2010

IN SHOOTING, India's Vijay Kumar won a bronze in the men's 25 metres centre fire pistol competition while rifle shooters put up a disappointing show in the 50 metres three position event held on Thursday.
Shooting, post CWG was being anticipated as one of he strong areas of India and till now the performance is average.
Another interesting win was the two silver medals India won in the men’s four and lightweight men’s four rowing events in the Asian Games. Anil Kumar, Saji Thomas, Ranjit Singh and Jenil Krishnan won silver in men’s four event. China won the gold while Uzbekistan grabbed the bronze.

In the lightweight men’s four, Lokesh Kumar, Manjeet Singh, Rajesh Kumar Yadav and Satish Joshi came second. Japan took the gold and Hong Kong bronze.

In the other event, our very own sports diva, Sania Mirza defeated Wing Venise Chan of Hon Kong to enter the pre-quarter finals of the Women’s Singles event at Asian Games.
Sania hardly broke sweat and took just 50 minutes to tame Chan 6-1 6-0 in her first round encounter at the Aoti Tennis Centre here. Sania will next face the winners of the match between sixth seed Shuai Zhang of Hong Kong and Nepal’s Malika Rana.
Yesterday, Sandhyarani Devi won a silver medal in Women's Wushu Sanshou 60kg event in the Asian Games. She put up a great fight but came only close to winning a gold.

One of the more known stars of Indian sports, Vijender Singh defeated Yu Ting Yang of Chinese Taipei 9-2 to move into the quarterfinals of the 75 kg section in boxing at the Foshan Gymnasium.
So far, it has been a winning day for India, be it Silver or Bronze medals, we are taking back something and that is the spirit that seems to keep it going. Till Gold finally comes to us, the silver medals should work as the silver lining on the dark cloud.

Shivendra Singh joined in the 48th minute to complete the Hong Kong rout.

India will face Bangladesh in the next Group match on November 17.  A gold medal in hockey in the Asian Games 2010 could give India a direct entry into the 2012 London Olympics.
Known as a nation with great hockey traditions, India's last hockey gold medal in Asian Games came in 1998 at Bangkok. However, India displayed a very disappointing performance in the last Asiad held at Doha not being able to qualify for semi-finals for the first time in history.

Hockey is the national game of India and the entire nation is expecting that the team would perform at top level and bring the gold to the country.

Positively jealous people buy iPhones, Blackberries for envious

A RECENTstudy has revealed that being jealous has got two approaches to it. One is, if you are jealous in a benign way, you might tend towards buying an iPhone–but if you are experiencing feelings of envy, chances are you will end up with a Blackberry.

"Our studies showed that people who had been made envious of someone who owned an iPhone were willing to pay 80 Euros more on average," wrote authors Niels van de Ven, Marcel Zeelenberg, and Rik Pieters of the Tilburg University.

The researchers made some important discoveries about the motivations that result from different kinds of envy.

Note that two types of envy exist: benign and malicious envy.

"Benign envy exists if the advantage of the other person is deserved, and motivates people to attain a coveted good or position for themselves. This more motivating type of envy makes people pay an envy premium for the products that elicited their envy,” wrote the authors.

On the other hand, malicious envy occurs if the other person is thought to be undeserving; it evokes a desire to "pull down" the other person.

In a series of experiments, the authors compared benign envy with its malicious cousin.

They found that only benignly envious people were willing to pay more for products that they coveted. Maliciously envious people were more likely to pay more for related but different products.

For example, people who felt maliciously envious of someone with an iPhone were more likely to pay more for a BlackBerry.

In the experiments, the participants were asked to imagine feeling jealousy and admiration for the fellow student (Benign Envy condition), to imagine feeling jealous and begrudging (the Malicious Envy condition), or just to imagine that they really liked the product (Control condition).

However, companies should be cautious to not evoke the more negative form of envy that drives people away from products.

Advertisers should make sure that the celebrities they want to use in their ads actually deserve their status.

"If they do not, these celebrities might actually trigger malicious envy and the sales of products from a competitor could even go up,” wrote the authors.

The findings were published in the Journal of Consumer Research.

Indians anguished over corruption in CWG Games

IT REFERS to media-reports about public-anger showered on chairperson of the organising committee (OC) for Commonwealth Games 2010, when some young men disrupted Suresh Kalmadi from dining at a Vasant Kunj restaurant at New Delhi as according to them the Parliamentarian was enjoying dinner using money siphoned from the current CWG Games-2010.

Situation became even more embarrassing when more people joined the protest on Suresh Kalmadi summoning his musclemen in defence forcing the notorious OC chief to run away leaving dinner in between.
If Union government fails to take instant action against corrupt ones of CWG-2010 just after the completion of the games, public anger may be disastrous. Union government should set an example by instant arrest of corrupt fellows of CWG-2010, say within a week ending October 17, 2010.

Even if no charges may be immediately proved against Suresh Kalmadi, he should not be spared from such an instant action. Because, if he can enjoy fruits of being OC chairperson of CWG-2010, he must be made to own responsibility for scams and scandals costing tax-payers thousands of crores rupees. Such an action showing big fish baking bread and cleaning toilets in jail on TV screens will practically and effectively check corruption and scams by the high and the mighty.

The boxing trio consisting Surnajoy Singh (52 kg), Manoj Kumar (64 kg) and Paramjeet Samota (91 kg) hauled three golds on Wednesday in their respective weight categories.

Samota's manipulated moves not just confused the spectators but also the game specialists, when he changed his attacking style from right hand to left. Meanwhile, in the 64 kg knockout English boxer, Bradley Saunders was left battered and bruised against Manoj Kumar, who registered a 11-2 win against him that made his journey towards the gold medal much more sweeter.

Although Vijender Singh's exit out of the semi finals came as a disappointment, Manoj Kumar tried to fill in the gap by stating there like Vijender, even he had kept the guard pretty close to his face. His style of attack confused the opponent which made his victory commendable.
